Hoyo de Monterrey is a non-Cuban cigar brand that has a long and storied history dating back to the mid-19th century. The brand was founded by a Spanish tobacco grower named José Gener, who established his first tobacco plantation in the town of San Juan y Martínez, located in the Vuelta Abajo region of Cuba.

Gener’s tobacco plantation was known for producing some of the finest tobacco in the world, and it wasn’t long before his cigars were in high demand among cigar enthusiasts around the globe. In 1865, Gener decided to name his brand “Hoyo de Monterrey” (which means “valley of Monterrey” in Spanish) in honor of the town where his tobacco plantation was located.
